While fingerprints are susceptible to dirt and moisture on the skin, skin damage and abrasion, the vascular patterns are assumed to be insensitive to these skin conditions. This biometric trait is based on the patterns formed by the blood vessels, located underneath the skin, that is, it is an internal biometric trait. Vascular pattern based biometrics have several advantages over, for example, fingerprints. Since the first commercial contactless palm vein acquisition device from Fujitsu became available in 2003, vascular pattern based biometrics have been employed in several application areas, especially in the banking area. Recently, vascular pattern based biometrics, especially hand and finger based vascular patterns (usually denoted as hand and finger vein recognition) have become more popular as well. The most commonly used biometric traits include fingerprints, face and iris. These biometric traits are unique to every person. Biometric authentication techniques are based on so-called biometric traits, which are behavioural or physiological characteristics of a person. It offers higher security and increased user convenience compared to traditional methods. This challenging dataset, which is one of the first publicly available contactless finger and hand vein datasets, is published as well.īiometric authentication is gaining more and more attention and replaces traditional authentication methods like passwords, signatures and tokens. An experimental evaluation using several well-established vein recognition schemes on a dataset acquired with the proposed capturing device confirms its good image quality and competitive recognition performance. ![]() Our capturing device is suitable for finger and hand vein image acquisition and is able to acquire palmar finger vein images using light transmission as well as palmar hand vein images using reflected light. We propose a novel contactless capturing device design, including technical details of its individual parts. A sophisticated capturing device design is important for good image quality and, furthermore, at a decent recognition rate. ![]() These datasets can be established using a suitable biometric capturing device. An important requirement for conducting research in vascular pattern recognition are available datasets. Vascular pattern based biometric recognition is gaining more and more attention, with a trend towards contactless acquisition.
